Meanwhile… at the Hall of Justice

Meanwhile… at the Hall of Justice: A Collection of Superhero Mishaps is a neat looking exhibition that Subtext is putting on the weekend of Comic-Con.

Meanwhile... at the Hall of Justice

Meanwhile... at the Hall of Justice

Let’s face it, everyone has a bad day. Even superheroes. And this July, Subtext will host a group exhibition that captures those mishaps for all to see. Did you know that the Hulk has been arrested for wreckless endangerment? Aquaman did some time for fishing in international waters without permits, and the Wonder Twins were still awaiting trial for public indecency. It just reminds us that even though they are super, they are still human (some of them anyways). Join us during Comic Con weekend at Subtext, and see for yourself what infractions your favorite heroes have been hiding under their capes.

Warmachine Sept. 2008 pictures

I got really bad about posting my Warmachine work in progress (WIP) photos over the last nine months or so. I would take the pictures but then never crop them to post. Here’s a few from September 2008 showing my work table and the pieces I was working on at the time.

4th of July on the deck of the Midway

I know this update is ten days late but we spent the $10 each to spend the evening of the 4th of July on the deck of the U.S.S. Midway floating aircraft carrier museum. We got there around 7:30pm, put a blanket down on the canted part of the flight deck and hung out until the fireworks at 9pm. It was a nice relaxing evening and they actually shot the same set of fireworks off from three different spots around the bay which was kinda cool.

They also had a nice custom soundtrack instead of the stupid easy listening crap that the radio stations usually play. It had a bit of the Rammstein “living in America” song and a sound bit which could have been R. Lee Ermey saying “Listen up maggots! Happy 4th of July, hoo-rah and Semper Fi”. All in all it was an enjoyable day.

Cox Tier 1 Support = Lame

So my router couldn’t get an IP via DHCP from my cable modem tonight for some reason. I first go through my usual ritual of power cycling the modem, then the router (which works 50% of the time). No dice, still getting 192.168.100.2 on the router. I then call up Cox tech support, using their automated system will get me back up & running about 90% of the time. Unfortunately tonight the IVR piped me into the queue for a live ticket taker.

Even more unfortunate was her attitude. I explained that even after power cycling both pieces of equipment my router was not getting an IP via the cable modem. Her instant response was “Cox does not troubleshoot wireless routers” so I explained that the router is wired directly to the modem. She then said “Cox does not troubleshoot routers” and we went around and around. Finally she decided to try to help me by walking me the long way through Start > Run > Cmd and doing an ipconfig. I played along to that point but told her that this info wouldn’t help since my computer was getting its IP from the router and the router wasn’t getting a valid IP from Cox.

I then insisted on speaking to a Tier 2 tech so she put me on hold for about three minutes. Of course just before she picked back up the router finally got an IP (since I kept clicking the Renew button in the interface). The sad part is that I asked about the intelligent IVR that usually takes care of the problem by remotely resetting my cable modem and such and she said they still have it so I’m frustrated that I had to speak to a ticket taker when the IVR does a better job.

Steampunk Vader

I ran across this nifty looking “brass” steampunk Darth Vader helmet and chest piece today. I almost didn’t notice the chest piece since it’s in different pictures but I like the analog pressure dial.

Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter

While browsing at the Science Fiction Book Club I ran across the DVD of Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter. Being an old-school Watchmen fan my interest was piqued so I looked to our Google overlords for guidance and the first hit was IGN: Watchmen: Tales of the Black Freighter Review.

This did a good job of summarizing the DVD and I think I may end up buying it once I’ve seen the actual movie. Yes, I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t seen it yet. I must be getting old since I heard it was a bit long and I figured I may as well watch it on my home theater instead.

I really liked the summary at the end of the article:

Whatever your feelings about the theatrical adaptation, this DVD serves as a terrific supplement to the Watchmen franchise. Those fans who weren’t totally satisfied with it may just find some consolation here, while the newly converted will appreciate the deeper look at the world this offers.

Weaponizers: the TV show

Wow, this new show on the Discovery Channel looks really cool: Weaponizers. Short version: guys bolt weapons onto stuff and go crazy. I saw a quick teaser for it over the weekend and it starts tonight. A quick Google search turned up this Weaponizers story at Wired. I didn’t see the show on the Discovery Channel site yet

The Geek Dad article at Wired says:

Remember the re-make of Death Race? It’s like that, except good.

Nifty Custom Miniatures Bases

I recently ran across some really neat miniature bases at Iron Halo. They sell both full bases as well as inserts to put inside the standard bases you already have.  I think that I’m going to get some for my warjacks, warcasters and solos; even though they are inexpensive I think it would be too much to do units of eight to ten troopers for me right now. Iron Halo Custom Bases

They actually come unpainted but the examples below are some of the styles I like, hopefully I can paint them up to look almost as good as these.

Harbinger Magazine

Harbinger Magazine

This is another indirect result of my cruising for Warmachine images, I linked to a page at Brookhurst Hobbies and ended up discovering Harbinger magazine which is all about miniatures. It looks like there’s some good stuff in here about all kinds of minis, painting tips etc. The link above is actually to their download page since there are quite a few issues that can be downloaded as PDF files.

This is another one of those random finds, I was looking for pictures of Warmachine minis from the game and stumbled across this great political image that AZRainman did of good ol’ Dubya. Check out his Photoshop Satire blog for more good stuff.
