Sadly Bo Diddley died today. I really love his music and it’s unfortunate that he really never got the recognition he deserved for his pioneering work.

Doppelrod – Level 38 Elf Guardian
My level 38 Mirkwood Elf Guardian in LoTRO just got a cool helmet called Balanthol so now he looks like a medieval Jason or something. It’s too bad that the logo comes down so far, it covers up some of the horns on the helmet. After many months someone actually pointed out to me that his name ends in “rod” and the kinship that I joined (because all my friends belonged to it) is named The Package. How I missed that one I’ll never know.

Finally: ink!
Yes, I’m nearly 40 now and finally got my first tattoo tonight. I have thought about this for at least ten years and finally decided on exactly what I wanted. My dad is the original owner of a ’67 Corvette and I decided that having that on my arm forever would be a good way of remembering my childhood (he bought the car two years before I was born so it’s always been in my life) and also remind me of my Dad, all the time we spent rebuilding the carb etc. on that car.
I am not one to get a portrait of my family members inked so I thought this was a nice balance. Of course I now have the bug and am planning my next one already. I will probably get a paw print from our first dog Saratoga next but after that I want a Lovecraft/Giger type of creature, I can’t wait to provide some background info & images and let the artist go wild.
Anyway here’s what it looked like just before the bandage went on:
I just washed it off and it looks even better now, will post that pic tomorrow (no time to crop it tonight).

Possibly the best cubicle prank ever
Somebody at work e-mailed out this 5MB video so I found it on YouTube to share. I’ve seen some wild cube pranks posted before and some of my friends have pulled off some good ones but this could be the best one I’ve ever seen.

Hardy Heron: complete
I thought the upgrade would finish unattended but it did ask twice about keeping or overwriting config file so the next morning I had to tell it to keep my Samba config file. That night when I got home I had one more prompt to answer and then it completed & rebooted shortly thereafter. The only hiccup that I’ve seen so far is that Samba would crash on startup or when I tried to open its control panel. I opened the smb.conf file and it looked like there was a syntax change so I commented out some old lines for folder shares and it seems to be working now.

Upgrading Zen Micro from hard drive to flash memory
I just came across this article describing how to replace the hard drive storage in a Zen Micro MP3 player with a solid-state CF flash memory card. I just might have to look into that, sounds like a fun weekend hacking project. I ran across the story at instructables while searching for an answer to why my Zen won’t boot after I let the battery run completely dry.

LoTRO Horse Ahoy
I finally finished all the little delivery quests of taking a horse from the stable master and delivering to three different stables all across the map, then finished his little race around the property in under two minutes. All of that for the privilege of earning my riding skill and paying 4 gold pieces for a horse.
It was sure worth it though, I can’t believe how fast I can get across the maps now. The only downside is that I collect less ore and wood on the way since I have to dismount to do that. I’m now walking around the northern Bree-lands grinding for medium hides so that I can master my Journeyman Tailor crafting skill.
Don’t clip your damn nails at work!
I am so sick of this person at work who clips his fingernails in his cube multiple times per week. Well, I hope it’s fingernails and not toenails. Why the hell would you wait to do that at work instead of at home? I sit here grinding my teeth for several minutes while listening to “click-click-click”.

I ran across this trailer (taped in a theater) for the upcoming X-Files 2 movie (I think it’s a July release).
There’s another “retrospective” trailer that has some spoilers at the X-Files News site but be careful, there are spoilers at the end. This second trailer looks like it was taped at a convention of some sort.

They put what in my SoBe?
I was really thirsty while waiting for my commuter train home the other day so I decided to buy a Mango Melon flavored SoBe drink at the deli. It was tasty as usual but then I made the mistake of reading the ingredients list. Why in the hell do they put Glycerol Ester of Wood Rosin in a beverage? When I think rosin I think of a major league pitcher and his chalky white bag.
This stuff also has “A blend of hibiscus, ginseng & astragalus”. The first one is a flower we used to grow in our backyard, the second is a common additive these days but wtf is astragalus? I had to look it up and the top three results at dictionary.com were foot bones in vertebrates. Down lower on the list is “a large genus of annual or perennial herbs or shrubs of north temperate regions; largest genus in the family Leguminosae”. Who knows what in the hell good that’s supposed to do for my body.
