LoTRO: Almost have a horse (finally)

I dinged 35 last night in LoTRO with my Elven Guardian (finally!) and have just over 5 gold. I already took the horse from the fields to Bree-town and am trudging back up there. Gads, I can’t wait until I can stop having to run everywhere!

What’s that you say? I said I’d never pay monthly for a game or play a MMORPG? Well last year when Lord of the Rings Online came out I figured I’d give it a try. I’d stayed away from the WoW bug that many of my friends had but being a lifelong Tolkien fan I couldn’t pass this one up.

Eight months later I’ve got my main character leveling up nicely and also a human alt Loremaster who’s at level 18 now.  One great thing about this alt is that his crafting profession is Scholar and my main is feeding him lots of relics so that even though he’s progressing as a scholar very slowly it would be even more slow without that feed.

Speaking of Peeps…

Speaking of Peeps my friend Darana posted a link to the Peep War game. It’s a miniature game (think D&D minis, Warhammer etc.) except you use marshmallow Peeps and jelly beans for pieces. I think I’ll download the zip file with the map and try it out while I can still buy Peeps at the grocery store.

…aaaaaand we’re back!

Sorry about the week of downtime, the server took a hard crash due to hardware failure a week ago. Thanks to the efforts of bri and mike she’s back up and running. Now if I can only remember the 2-3 posts I wanted to write during the down time…

Easter Peep Show

Sweetest Easter peep show I’ve ever seen (and yes it’s more of a strip club than a peep show, so sue me):

Holy crap, 1TB drives for $250

Damn, I can’t believe how fast hard drive storage prices are falling. I got an e-mail from Newegg saying I could buy the Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm SATA drive with a whopping 1 terabyte of storage for $249 (with a $20 promo code) and with free shipping. I wish I had my tax refund back already.

On top of that they are selling 2GB of Corsair DDR2 800 for $69 (after $15 instant savings) and then on top of that a $40 mail-in rebate for net cost of just $29. Unbelievable, I remember paying about $100 for my first stick of 8MB of RAM for my first Mac.

Anime Batman

I’m not really a bit anime fan, although I loved Akira. I just discovered via Topless Robot that there’s an upcoming anime DVD of Batman: Gotham Knight. Here’s one image, check out the full story for more.

X-Wing: the Kite for Nerds

Topless Robot reported on the 2008 Toy Fair and showed this cool X-Wing kite (scroll down, it’s #5). I may have to look for it later this year since my wife likes to fly kites and I don’t have one. (#4 Remote Control Zombies looked fun, too.)

Speaking of ATT/Bell…

I found this neat little image while looking for an at&t logo for the previous article:

The way I figure there’s really only at&t, Qwest and Verizon left as the larger local phone carriers (ILECs for you telco geeks). Sure, there are little mom & pop LECs out there but I swear we’re on the way back to Ma Bell (who knows how much longer Qwest can hang in there).

Good-bye Ma Bell, hello cable

I know at&t isn’t exactly Ma Bell (but they are headed that way with all the acquisitions) but I have officially ditched them in favor of Cox Communications (yep, the cable TV company) for my landline service. I know, some of you think landlines are so 20th century but we like having one.

The phone portion of my Cox bill should be about the same as my old at&t bill plus our long-distance bill combined. We got a calling plan that includes our whole county for free and 90% of our LD was in-county calling so we should be okay with the default 15 cents/minute for other LD.

Man Steals Tacos at Gunpoint

Yes it’s true, some guy in Fontana, CA had such a craving for carnitas that he robbed a guy on a bicycle at gunpoint for $20 worth of tacos. Now I love a good carnitas taco as much as (or more than) the next guy but that’s kind of silly. And what was the victim doing with that may tacos? Around here that would be enough food for 3-4 people, wonder if he had some half-baked friends waiting for him at home? That’s a sad thought: the poor courier showing up at the house empty handed, the wailing of two other stoners about the lack of munchies. What a shame.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) – A hunger for carnitas nearly led to some carnage after a Fontana man was robbed of a bag of tacos at gunpoint.

Police Sergeant Jeff Decker said the 35-year-old victim had just bought about $20 in tacos from a street-corner stand Sunday night and was bicycling home when the suspect confronted him and said “Give me your tacos.”

Decker said the suspect grabbed the bag of food, punched the victim in the face and began to flee.

When the victim demanded his tacos back, the suspect pointed what appeared to be a handgun at the man and threatened to kill him before running away.

Order of the Stick

A friend of mine turned me on to the Order of the Stick web comic. It’s one of those rarities: a web comic that is actually funny! Even though I haven’t played D&D in over 20 years I still find it quite amusing. Do yourself a favor and start back at #1 and read up from there (it’s up over 500 strips now).

Lame vanity plates of the month

I’ve seen two horrible vanity plates lately that deserve to be mocked.

“WIFSCAD” was on a new pearl white Cadillac DTS. Something tells me she didn’t pick out that plate herself.

“SIXVI6” must be a guy who really wants to show the world his love for Satan. I wonder what he put in the explanation section of the application to get it by the censor (or maybe the censors only care about sex & drugs, not Satan).  He probably thinks he’s soooo clever.

Heart-kun

I got this as one of those e-mails that gets forwarded repeatedly but I don’t remember seeing it before.

A PUPPY has been born in Japan with a large, clear, love-heart-shaped pattern in his coat. The Chihuahua was born in May as one of a litter to a breeder. Shop owner Emiko Sakurada said it was the first time a puppy with the marks had been born out of a thousand she had bred. She had no plans to sell the puppy, which has been named ‘Heart-kun’. The long-coated male Chihuahua puppy was born in Odate, northern Japan.
