Comic-Con memorables 2005

Since Comic-Con is coming up tomorrow I thought I’d post some quotes that I overheard last year at the Con:

14 year-old boy with a lisp:

L. Ron Hubbard is rad!

8 year-old boy after seeing the action figure (how a kid that young got to see the movie is beyond me):

Look mom, Scarface!

Overhead pages:

Craven Moorehead to the front desk

Nick Unt to the front desk

(It used to be that they didn’t do any overhead pages so we missed out on all this fun)

Interesting Products
Sota Toys had a neat Johnny Cash protoype figure and when I checked the web site today they are offering it as a Con exclusive this year. They also have a kick-ass Cthuhlu figure that I really want now that I’ve seen it.

The Ugly Dolls were kind of fun.

1000 Steps to World Domination looks like a good read.

The Bolt Gallery has some neat stuff but most of their site is broken right now. I actually have a cool Alien-looking guy from the county fair last year that looks very similar but is dark gray instead of chrome.

I wrote down the Rix Products address after buying the Futurama trash can from someone there. They have a bunch of other pop culture stuff like Family Guy, South Park and The Simpsons so click around.

Public art around the world

Thanks go to Mangoat for this page with various funny and bizarre statues from around the world.

haha.nu – interesting findings over the net

Some of them are great fun, some are kind of vulgar and some of them just make me say “What the hell was the artist thinking?” Something to notice is that almost all of them are from outside the USA.

Pentagon Intelligence Isn’t

This clip from ABC News shows how clueless the Intelligence branch of the Pentagon can be. Some joker at the Pentagon saw a fan film of BF2 and made the claim before a Congressional Intelligence committee that terrorists had taken the game, modified it so that players could be terrorists and kill Americans. Luckily it was at a rare open session so it was all caught on tape.

This ABC News video shows that footage along with various interviews. They of course had someone point out that the games comes out of the box with the Middle East Coalition and nothing has to be done to it to play as the MEC and kill Americans.

And I mean really, how many terrorists have military helicopters and tanks anyway? You’d think our intelligence community would have been clever enough to figure out that the clip they saw on insurgent web sites was created by a European BF2 fan at home.

Death Star Firepower

Aha, finally somebody did a physics-based article on Star Wars. I was getting tired of all the physicists writing about Star Trek all the time.

A Visit to Yesterland

Yesterland’s tag line is “The Discontinued Disneyland” and it’s a fun read. There are some attractions there that I remember from my childhood (like the Submarine Voyage) and others that came and went before my time (like the House of the Future).

It’s full of interesting facts too; did you know that the submarines were repainted from their plain gray color to the bright yellow in the 1980’s?

Whale Sharks Ahoy!

I didn’t know anybody had whale sharks in captivity at all, but apparently Atlanta had two males and now they added a female for some hot threesome action.

One last funky auction for tonight

If you have at least $45K handy you can pick this girl’s new last name:
eBay: I WILL CHANGE MY LAST NAME!

She says it will be “forever” but how are you going to keep tabs? And isn’t she a little greedy, maybe she should have gone for just $10K instead.

Battlefield 2142 trailer looks cool

The new Battlefield 2142 trailer movie is out. It looks like it could be a lot of fun, kind of like Planetside without the monthly fee.

Coffee won’t give you heart disease after all

Here’s a nice link I found on CNN:
Coffee by the Tank Car Does Not Increase Risk of Coronary Heart Disease – CME Teaching Brief – MedPage Today
BOSTON, April 24 – Gallons and gallons of coffee, day in and day out, year after year, decade after decade, do not increase the risk of coronary heart disease, researchers here reported today.

In fact, men and women who drank six or more cups of coffee a day for up to 20 years had a slightly lower relative risk of developing coronary artery disease than men who consumed a cup or less a day (P for trend= 0.41 for men and 0.08 for women) according to a study in the April 25 issue of Circulation, Journal of the American Heart Association.

Now I don’t remember my statistics class that well but I’m glad to hear that anyway.

Freaky news from Nepal

Someone actually posted this link to a software support e-mail list (ARSList for Remedy) for some reason. God only knows what possessed him to post it there. If you have a weak stomach don’t click the link…
