I am eeally looking into trying the Merca miniatures game, especially after I finally found a faction guide:

I need to read more but I think I can just buy a pair of minis and their cards to try it out.
Who knew I’d find some great craft brews in San Antonio on a business trip? I checked out Beer Advocate to find good beer places and it mentioned Gabriel’s Wine & Spirits Superstore. They have an outstanding selection of craft beers including a lot of regionals that I have never seen before. Below you can see my hotel room fridge after I spent $25 there:
So far I’ve only tried the Breckenridge Brewing Vanilla Porter but it was really good. I almost bought a six-pack but ended up with a single after I grabbed a 750ml farmhouse ale (La Bestia Aimable from Ranger Creek, brewed right here in San Antonio).
I finally have started playing FPS games seriously again now that I have a new rig that can handle newer games with decent graphics settings and high frame rates. I picked up Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on Steam for $20 and it’s been pretty fun so far. I don’t like that I have to unlock basic things like the Engineer’s repair tool or the Medic’s defibrillator; those seem like class basics and without being able to revive a teammate the Medic is just a dope with a bipod machine gun so far. At least I unlocked the med kits so I can drop those for teammates.
Gdaybloke posted a pic of a friend’s Wurmwood model that has got to be the best custom Warmachine or Hordes model I’ve ever seen. Yes, that’s a treehouse and a tire swing. (Scroll to the end of the article for the text accompanying the picture.)
I returned to the Lord of the Rings Online MMO a last fall when it went free to play. Luckily I was grandfathered in as a Premium member since I used to subscribe a few years ago. The content has really grown and I have found that the new pricing model works well for me. My primary character is far past the free areas but I don’t mind paying ten bucks now and again to unlock quests for a new area, it sure beats $10-15 every month.
The lore content of the game is also great, lots of good stuff if you are a Tolkien fan. From what I hear there are also a lot fewer asshats than in WoW. Use the link below to sign up!
I suppose that’s what I get for randomly trolling the After 12 fail blog but there you go. I don’t even know where to start with this one.

I am very grateful to Ken Hanscom for posting this article about how to adjust the voltage on the color tubes in my rear projection TV (Sony 57WS500 that we bought in 2002). A few months ago I started noticing that when the screen was very dark or black (like when there was no input) I could see a series of blue arcing lines across the screen. Then a month or so ago the entire screen would have a very noticeable blue cast when it first powered up. It got to the point a few days ago where the entire screen would go to about 95% blue for the first five minutes every time we powered it up.
I spent about 10 minutes following this guide to pop off the front grille and make a very minute adjustment to the potentiometer for the voltage to the blue gun and now my blacks are nice and crisp again. This saved us from having to watch blue TV all the time or buy a brand new set. Thanks Ken!

Yes, it’s true. Now that Lord of the Rings Online has gone Free to Play (F2P) I have started playing again. The pricing model works very well for me since I don’t put in as many hours per month as a hardcore player does. I get the quests in the basic areas for free, then drop a few bucks here or there as I level up and start exploring new areas. This way if I go an entire month and only play 1-2 hours I don’t feel like I’ve wasted my $15 (or whatever the monthly charge is now).
Yesterday was the best car experience I’ve ever had. I bought my Dad’s old truck so we went to AAA to do the title change. We waited maybe 10 minutes before being called to the window and $15 and ten minutes later we were out the door. We then took my old truck (1998 Ranger) to Carmax to see if they would even want to buy it. I had a big dent in the front left quarter panel but after about 50 minutes total time we were leaving and I had a check in my hand that was probably double what I had expected to get.
We subsequently heard from a friend that they bought their last car at Carmax a year ago and were only there for maybe 60 to 90 minutes which makes me want to never buy a new car again; I’ll just use Carmax.
I was cruising Usenet this morning and saw a guy posting about a band called Amarna Reign and he calls it melodic progressive deathcore. Really? Does that even make any kind of sense at all? I then Googled the band and the first two hits are their MySpace and Facebook pages. Apparently they don’t even have their own web site. A search on Wikipedia shows that they must have taken their name from ancient Egyptian history so that’s one good point in their favor.
This picture really doesn’t look deathcore, does it?
Thanks to Mangoat for posting this one, classic GenCon if I ever saw it.
Check out Keith Knight’s write-up of his visit to Comic-Con this year. We ended up at his booth while he was eating that lobster roll.
Here’s what he closed with, I love it!
Probably my favorite part of Comic-Con is meeting the writers and artists in person. The best place to do that is the Small Press area and one of my first stops every year is to see Keith Knight, creator of The K Chronicles, (Th)ink and The Knight Life. If you aren’t familiar with his work do yourself a huge favor and pick up one of his books, I don’t know how to describe his art style except to say that it’s entertaining. His writing is always funny and every once in a while he touches on current social issues and will really make you think. Check out his official site at http://www.kchronicles.com/ to see the daily (Th)ink single-panel comics as well as the weekly K Chronicles; if you enjoy it then go all out and get the The Complete K Chronicles.
I again saw Keith at a spotlight panel about him & his work but this year was special: he was awarded an Ink Pot award which was a complete surprise to him. It surprised me as well since I thought they only gave those out at a special banquet. Even though Keith will re-use certain strips in his panels I always enjoy attending since I am guaranteed to laugh the whole time.
This year I picked up the latest K Chronicles book, I Left My Arse in San Francisco as well as the first Knight Life book, “Chivalry Ain’t Dead“.
This year I also met Stan Yan, creator of The Wang. He was great fun to talk to so I bought his latest book, Erection Year and he did a neat drawing inside for me. My wife gets migraines from MSG which I mentioned to him since the front cover says “NOW WITH MSG!” so the character he drew inside (Wang’s mother) is saying “MSG is good for you!”
